Commissions from National Newspapers and Sunday Supplements have criteria which must be met to give photo-editors the flexibility to use shots in different formats. Whilst shooting the actor, Aidan Gillen for The Sunday Times Culture Magazine, Mark McCall was faced with the task of producing a series of edgy portraits of an actor at the top of his game with the possibility of the final images being used as the cover of the magazine. A tight time frame for the shoot, a challenging location, poor weather and the need to produce a range of options for the paper means a busy 30 minute shoot. Planning ahead and knowing how to use the location to your advantage is of great benefit when shooting portraits on location. Mark McCall Photographs People has over 25 years experience recording famous faces for publicaton across the spectrum of media. This black & white study of Aidan Gillen did end up on the cover of the Sunday Times Culture Magazine after all!
